Emergency committee to represent Palestinians in dialogue with Lebanese government
2 Jun 2008
The recently formed Palestinian emergency committee in Lebanon will take charge of dialogue with the new Lebanese government regarding the Palestinian presence in Lebanon, says Sultan Abu Al-'Aynayn, secretary of Fatah and representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Lebanon.
Abu Al-'Aynayn and Khalid 'Arif, who head the PLO's foreign relations team met on Sunday in Majdilyoun in Lebanon with Lebanese lawmaker Bahiya Al-Hariri. "We updated Ms Al-Hariri on the dire conditions of the Palestinian people in Palestine. We also discussed our people's crises as a new Lebanese government is about to be composed, especially the Nahr Al-Bared crisis. We also hope that the Palestinians in Lebanon will benefit from the Lebanese reconciliation especially that there has been previous promises to take the Palestinian presence in Lebanon more seriously," Abu Al-'Aynayn said.
When questioned as to whether the Lebanese reconciliation will be an opportunity to reactivate the joint Lebanese-Palestinian committee, he said, "There is no doubt now that all the Palestinian factions are represented in the emergency committee. This committee could officially become the main representative of the Palestinians in Lebanon."
