In memoriam: Dr Fathieh Saudi

"We are saddened by the passing of Dr Fathieh Saudi. She was a paediatrician but better known to most as a poet and writer. For many of us, we have heard her passionately read her poems in numerous events in support of the Palestinians. Those of us who are close to her are aware of her courageous battle against breast cancer. Even when she was terminally ill, Fathieh continued writing, speaking and poetry reading, inspiring us with her vivaciousness and great sense of joy and commitment. For those of us who have the privilege of knowing her closely we will always miss her, and remember her with love and fondness.

Fathieh worked with the Palestine Red Crescent Society during the 1982 Invasion and Siege of Lebanon and Beirut, narrowly escaping the Sabra Shatilla Massacre as she was out of town with the ceasefire. She returned to help the victims upon the news of the atrocity breaking out, and also wrote extensively of  those dark events.

We in MAP will always be grateful for her friendship and support, and will remember her lovely smile. It is with much sadness that we bid our dear friend farewell."
