MAP is delighted to be joining the director of the Lajee Centre in Glasgow this weekend for the handover of a cheque from the #MatchTheFineForPalestine fundraiser. The money raised is being split equally between MAP and the Lajee Centre, a Palestinian NGO providing sporting activities and social and rights based training for young refugees in Aida refugee camp, Bethlehem.
MAP is incredibly grateful for the support of Celtic fans and people from all over the world who supported the #MatchTheFineForPalestine fundraiser. MAP’s half of the over £176,000 raised by nearly 10,000 people will go a long way to supporting the medical projects MAP provides for Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. This includes providing a mobile clinic for threatened Bedouin communities in the Jordan Valley, limb reconstruction surgery for those affected by conflict in Gaza, and specialised burns treatment across the West Bank.
The #MatchTheFineForPalestine campaign comes at an important time. Israeli settlements are expanding across the occupied Palestinian territory, demolitions of Palestinian homes dramatically increased last year to the highest numbers since records began and there is an ongoing man-made humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This year Palestinians will also be marking 50 years of life under military occupation and 10 years of the intensified blockade and closure of Gaza.
In the face of this daily reality, international solidarity such as the #MatchTheFineForPalestine campaign is more important than ever.
