Background to the crisis

MAP launched its current emergency appeal for the Occupied Palestinian Territories on 15 May 2006. This appeal was launched in response to the Palestinian Authority funding crisis, precipitated by the victory of Hamas in Palestinian legislative elections in January this year.

The suspension of Western aid to the Palestinian Authority has resulted in a chronic shortage of medical supplies in hospitals and health clinics throughout the Occupied Territories. MAP's appeal for essential drugs, medical equipment and food has so far raised over £200,000.

The serious escalation in violence following the capture of an Israeli soldier by Palestinian militants has deepened international concern over the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. With shortages of electricity, water and fuel, the United Nations warned recently of the desperate humanitarian situation facing Gaza's civilian population.
