West Bank to see Israeli-imposed closure during Passover holidays
7 April 2009
MAAN - From just before midnight on 6 April to the evening of 18 April the West Bank will be under a general closure, announced the office of the Minister of Defense Tuesday.
The closure is being imposed for the duration of the Jewish Passover. According to a government statement, "for the duration of the closure, persons in need will be permitted to pass [into Israel and East Jerusalem] in order to receive medical care. Additionally, the passage of humanitarian aid as well as doctors, medical personnel, NGO members, lawyers, religious workers and additional professional groups will be authorized by the District Coordination and Liaison offices. In addition, commercial crossings will remain open for the passage of supplies into the Judea and Samaria area."
Palestinian Christians, who will be observing Easter during the closure, are expected to face increased difficulty in entering Jerusalem for worship.
