Responding to the attacks on Gaza
15 September 2009
The brutal attacks might be over, but the pain and devastation continue to echo around Gaza.
The next stage of MAP's Gaza Emergency Appeal is looking to raise money to support:
●Victims with Burns Injuries - MAP is now launching a programme to supply equipment and train surgical and nursing staff in comprehensive burns treatment throughout Gaza.
●Young Mothers - MAP is setting up a specialist midwife emergency hotline to ensure that women receive support in such times

THE WAR ON GAZA
MAP launched its Gaza Emergency Appeal on 27th December 2008 raising over £1million in a month. Every pound donated is being spent in Gaza, saving lives and bringing relief to the victims of this war.

After 22 days of Israeli attacks between December 27 and January 17 over 1,400 Palestinians have been killed and over 5,550 are injured.
Large numbers of civilians are amongst the dead, and the World Health Organisation estimates that at least 412 children and 95 women have been killed.
The start of the ceasefire meant that MAP entered the next stage of its response - the 'Early Recovery and Rehabiliation Programme' (ERRP).
We are working in partnership with organisations and individuals that will offer the Palestinians of Gaza support as they attempt to rebuild their shattered lives.

HOW CAN MAP GET INTO GAZA?
* MAP is able to get supplies in to Gaza. Humanitarian aid is being allowed into Gaza, though the need is very great and the level of access is far from perfect.
* MAP was able to release over $150,000 of supplies (medicines and surgical kits) in the first hours of the crisis. We have released over $500,000 worth of aid in total since the start of the conflict.
* All MAP aid and medical supplies are accounted for. MAP has staff in Ramallah, Jerusalem and across Gaza ensuring that aid is tracked and accounted for through its delivery from supply to beneficiary.
* MAP has a strict system of monitoring aid delivery and ensuring that it reaches only the intended beneficiaries. MAP's aid and medical supplies are of high visibility with a detailed inventory that allows for comprehensive tracking.
* MAP has over a decade of experience delivering and effectively distributing aid supplies across Gaza. For all aid agencies working to deliver aid into Gaza, the main obstacle remains access issues through crossing points controlled by Israel.
HOW DID MAP RESPOND?
MAP set up an emergency task force team to sort out stock, pharmaceutical teams and storage spaces to redeploy over the Gaza strip, establishing three main distribution centres on in South, Middle and North Gaza Strip. Why? Military action prevented internal travel.
* Ensuring the central blood bank has sufficient capacity and ongoing storage with the Blood Donation Association - we are partners with both and are strengthening the partnership between these two to ensure full coverage in Gaza.
* Equipment and spare parts inventory developed - this will happen once we finish with current emergency support to central drugs store- This will support not only medical but non medical items essentials for hospital delivery - again we will be working closely with WHO, ICRC and others to share this info and support survey.

* Drugs, disposables and technical aids for those items that will have been overlooked - including need for additional support for orthopaedics and medical rehabilitation - this will be for both NGOs and MAP - MAP is already providing pervious items at zero stock that were raised at central meeting for children with Cystic Fibrosis - this is only one month supply - once we get the pharmacy working
* Provision of emergency shelter (mattresses and blankets MAP already has pre-positioned) in addition Hygiene Kits for displaced families.
"Brilliant. This is top pirority and really useful. Thank you to MAP UK for your help"
Tony Lawrance, Acting Head of Office, World Health Organization (WHO) comments on MAP's coordination role during the Gaza Crisis.
