Child Health Diplomas

MAP continues to provide a core grant to this project, run in partnership with Jazoor, which is aimed at improving the quality of child health services through building the capacity of health providers participating in a Child Health Certificate supported by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

MAP trustee Dr Pam Zinkin recently returned from the West Bank where she was conducting an evaluation of the project.

"The diploma has a ten year history in the region after one of MAP's earlier volunteers Lady Patience Moberly introduced it. The course is designed for both doctors and nurses and comprises of 11 modules running over an 14-15 month period.

The course itself covers a range of general and community paediatrics including growth, development, disability and child protection. The course is taught in English and is in essence a practical diploma to improve the standards of those attending."

Whilst visiting the projects centre near Jenin, in the north of the West Bank, Pam was struck by the restrictions of movement created by the infrastructure of walls, checkpoints and barriers. In addition, the very fundamental ability to provide nutritional food for children was being compromised by the separation wall's construction on Palestinian land.

About Jazoor

Juzoor was founded in 1996 by a group of multi-disciplinary professionals with a strong emphasis on health. The name Juzoor, meaning "Roots" in Arabic, is a reflection of the founders' and staff members' long and deep-rooted experience in their respective fields, and their connections and contributions to many of the occupied Palestinian territory's leading grassroots health and community development organisations. During the last twenty years the professionals and staff affiliated with the foundation have been working on health and social development issues, and have served as advisors and mobilising agents for many non-governmental, UN, and other international organizations; as a result, they bring extensive knowledge and practical experience to their work on behalf of the foundation. Juzoor is committed to promoting the well-being of the Palestinian people by working closely with community-based organisations, Ministry of Health, associations of and individual health providers, by participating in and providing health training programs for the development of human capacities and by working to affect health and social policies.
