Current Emergencies
EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLEIsraeli military incursions and de facto siege means that the situation in Gaza is in constant crisis. 75% of the Gaza Strip?s population are now dependent on food aid, the highest rate of food assistance anywhere in the world. Hospitals are struggling to provide even the most basic of services, and the situation is worsening by the hour. Please support this emergency appeal to provide life-saving drugs, medical equipment and food to the Palestinian people. Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is one of very few humanitarian agencies with a permanent presence in Gaza, and we will stay there. By supporting MAP, you can help us to do all we can to provide for people?s urgent medical and health needs. Right now food and medical supplies are desperately needed ? not only in Gaza, but throughout the occupied Palestinian territory. In the longer term, MAP will continue to support projects that help to provide for the future health and needs of the Palestinian people ? such as providing access to clean water, caring for the disabled and giving psychological support to children traumatised as a result of being exposed to violence. In the last 12 months, the people of the Gaza Strip have suffered frequent Israeli military incursions, factional fighting and the wanton destruction of their infrastructure and land. the same time, Gazans have been denied the freedom of movement to an unprecedented degree. Today the Palestinian people do not enjoy the most basic of human rights ? the right to health. Gaza?s Ministry of Health says that from the daily average of 50-70 patients needing to have medical care outside Gaza, an average of 4 people are currently allowed to enter Israel or Egypt for treatment. This puts additional pressure on an already overstretched health service. Unless hospitals are provided with medical supplies it is inevitable that wounded and sick patients will die. Today food, medicines and medical supplies are desperately needed. With Gaza?s crossings into Israel almost permanently closed, essential supplies have been reduced to a trickle. Maram, a nine year old Gazan girl, is being kept indefinitely at a-Shifa hospital in Gaza. Maram suffers from idiopathic thrombocytopenia, a condition which results in a drop in blood platelets and which can result in haemorrhaging and a painful rash. She cannot leave the hospital as the drug required to treat her condition, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), is no longer available at a-Shifa. Doctors are worried that Maram could bleed to death from a simple cut. Other children in Gaza are faced with the same problem. Your gift of £50 could help to buy a dose of IVIG, to help children such as Maram. Gaza?s only commercial crossing is frequently closed. In September 2007, a total of 1,426 truckloads of supplies and humanitarian aid entered Gaza, compared with 3,647 truckloads during the same period in 2005. With three quarters of the population now dependent on food aid, the impact of these closures on people?s health is catastrophic. Chronic malnutrition and dietary-related diseases are increasing. Iron-deficiency anaemia affects 25% of children under five and 33% of women of childbearing age. MAP is pre-positioning food parcels to ensure that we are in a position to help as many families as possible. Our 23 years of experience working in Palestine has given us the local knowledge and expertise to deliver supplies quickly, efficiently, and to the people that need them most. MAP urgently needs your support so that we can continue to provide people with life-saving medical aid, as well as the longer-term support that will lead to lasting improvements.
