Give Shares

Do you have a few windfall shares from privatisation or demutualisation? Or perhaps you inherited a small parcel of shares that are gathering dust and are making little difference to you?

Owning just a few shares is often regarded as a bit of a nuisance - they are expensive to sell and may generate more paperwork than income. You could turn these shares into something of real value by giving them to MAP.

What is share giving?
Giving shares to charity is not a new idea, but there is now an extra tax incentive to ensure share giving is an effective way of giving to charity. If you give shares to MAP, you can claim back full tax relief against the value of the shares.

For example, a £1,000 gift of shares will cost higher taxpayers £600 and standard rate taxpayers £720 because you can claim tax back on your giving. Giving shares to charity is also exempt from capital gains tax.

For more information about giving shares to charity, please visit (External) HM Customs and Revenue website.

How to give shares?
You can make a gift of shares and name Medical Aid for Palestinians as the charity you wish to benefit from the proceeds. Further information and advice is available at the Charities Aid Foundation or at ShareGift. Both organisations will be able to handle the gift of shares for you.
